Michigan voters on Tuesday will be asked to approve a proposal that would ban affirmative action in Michigan.
On the ballot as Proposal 2, if approved by voters, the measure would amend Michigan's constitution to ban affirmative action programs that give preferential treatment to groups or individuals based on their race, gender, color, ethnicity, or national origin for public employment, education or contracting purposes.
We've come a long way – and Michigan further than most.
But we still have a long way to go to insure equal opportunity for all people.
Approval of Proposal 2 would do more than simply ban colleges and universities from giving preferential treatment to minority groups in admissions.
The amendment would have far-reaching and potentially devastating effects, like prohibiting the recruitment efforts aimed at women and minority students.
It would potentially ban education and training opportunities that focus on minority or female students.
States like California, which have enacted similar bans, report serious declines in enrollment of minority students.
The Michigan proposal is similar to the one passed in California.
Michigan's diversity is its cornerstone.
Protect it Tuesday by voting NO on Proposal 2.
