Dowagiac Board of Education Monday night accepted Greg Ferrier's resignation.
Ferrier cited business reasons in his Oct. 9 resignation letter for stepping down with 2 1/2 years left on his four-year term.
Ferrier was elected in May 2005 to a term expiring at the end of June 2009.
School board President Randy Cuthbert said the district will accept applications from citizens interested in being appointed to the vacant seat until 4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27.
Written expressions of interest in the appointment should be addressed to Superintendent Peg Stowers.
The district has 30 days to fill the vacancy.
Cuthbert said Sheryl File will take Ferrier's place on the Personnel Committee with Bill Lawrence and Larry Seurynck to review applications.
Ferrier had been appointed to school board in the summer of 2004 when seven-year member Tina Haggin moved to Grand Blanc.
Ferrier, a 1981 Union High School graduate, prevailed by 30 votes over former teacher Susan Miller, DUHS Class of 1978, 776 to 746.
William Leonard finished third with 219 votes. Corinne Hoyt tallied 155 ballots. Steve Newitt received 96 votes despite withdrawing from the contest.
