NILES – It was no doubt which team was the biggest threat heading into Friday's Lakeland Conference tennis championship at Leeper Park in South Bend, Ind.
Brandywine claimed the title the two previous years and have since dominated the LAC, so it was no surprise to hear that the Lady Cats picked up their third straight conference championship.
"I was concerned going in because we hadn't competed in over a week and a half due to the weather," Brandywine coach Joe Marazita said following the win. But Marazita's worries were put to rest fast as his team proved why it has remained a top competitor.
Brandywine finished with a score of 46, while Buchanan took second place with 37. In third was Edwardsburg with 33, fourth went to Bridgman with 23, Cassopolis took fifth with 21 and Coloma rounded out the six teams with eight points.
The Bobcats placed all eight flights in the finals and claimed six flight championships.
Winning for Brandywine were Amy Konopinski (No. 1 singles), Amelia Harrison (No. 2 singles), Brittney Patterson (No. 3 singles), Aubrey Espick (No. 4 singles), Morgan Bailey and Jo Ferenczi (No. 3 doubles) and Brooke Coshow and Lynnette Earl (No. 4 doubles).
Erin Sinkoff and Jamie Bartuska (No. 1 doubles) and Erin Fuson and Samantha Quartuccio (No. 2 doubles) were flight runners-up for the Bobcats.
Buchanan's Robin Bahr and Megan Vylenio were crowned champs at No. 1 doubles, while Mary Martin and Brianne Weldy claimed the No. 2 doubles championship for the Bucks.
"I was extremely proud that we put eight flights in the finals and came away with six championships. Hopefully, we will play as well next week at regionals," Marazita added.
