Once again the hallways in the Dowagiac schools are full of life as students begin another school year.
At the high school fall signals the beginning of many different student events and community activities.
On the horizon in the months of October and November we have Homecoming, choir concerts, band festivals and the senior citizen luncheon taking place.
This year we entertain Gull Lake at the DUHS Homecoming on Oct. 6.
The events start with our annual parade which winds through town.
Celebration Graduation has added a port-a-pit tailgate party in the west parking lot before the game, which will kick off at 7 p.m. at Chris Taylor-Alumni Field.
There are many different activities scheduled for the students at the high school such as spirit days, a pep rally and a Homecoming dance following the game.
The DUHS choir and band classes are in full swing and they are busily preparing for many different performances.
The choir, under the direction of Jeff Robinson, will have its first concert of the year on Oct. 24, 7 p.m. at the Dowagiac Middle School Performing Arts Center.
Josh Bartz's Chieftain Marching Band has already been performing its new halftime show, "King Kong," to large crowds at Chris Taylor-Alumni Field.
The band will also be competing in a district festival at Lakeshore High School on Oct. 11.
The senior citizen luncheon has been a very popular community event at the high school for the past 16 years.
This year the luncheon is on Nov. 16.
Twice a year, students from Linda O'Keefe's Healthy Lifestyles classes cater a luncheon specifically for our area senior citizens.
On average, 120 students participate in this community event.
They serve as greeters who help direct the guests to the media center and coat checkers who gladly find a hanger for your coat.
Under the direction of Mrs. O'Keefe, students not only help prepare the food, they also act as servers. Though the menu changes yearly, the food is always warm and good.
