NILES – Marshall broke the Niles varsity basketball team's winning streak Tuesday evening by taking a 45-29 win.
Before the loss, the Lady Vikings were 7-0. Niles coach Jim Arnold said not enough offense and way too many turnovers caused the Vikes to fall.
"A very pourous defense and a poor preparation on my part. We came out in the first quarter and played well. Then we couldn't shoot it, we couldn't catch it, we couldn't pass it and found ourselves in a deep hole which we couldn't get out of," Arnold said.
The Vikes had a 9-4 lead after the first quarter, but in the second they scored just two points, while Marshall scored 15. Niles was outscored in the third 16-11 and the fourth 10-7.
No Niles player scored in double digits as Lindsay Craig led the team with nine points, including one 3-pointer. Courtney Teske added eight points and Kaitlyn Touhey had six.
For Marshall, Liz Gehrig had 14 points, with two 3-pointers and Danielle Hicks had 13 points.
"Give credit to Marshall. They definitely out played us and outhustled us. We'll try and right the ship and see if we can be competitive with Benton Harbor on Thursday. Our effort will be better," Arnold said.
The Vikings will travel to the Tigers' court for a 7:30 p.m. tip off time.
