Vikes open season with a bang

NILES – It was a great opening night for all four of the Ring Lardner Middle School girls basketball teams.
In the eighth grade games, the Viking's A team handed Dowagiac's Orange team a 28-9 loss, while the Black team suffered a 19-11 setback to the Niles B team.
Victoria Robinson led the Black team with five points. Kaisha Martin and Kiele Belew both scored two points.
The Black team was led offensively by Shatesha White and Roberta Payne with four points each. Ashley Charles and Erin Stanton scored two and one points respectively.
Seventh grade basketball
The seventh grade B team handed Dowagiac a 22-7 loss, while the Lady Vikes' A team picked up a 28-6 victory.
For the B team, Savannah Sullivan led Niles with eight points, while Brea Haines and McKayla each had six.
Scoring for the A team were Sarah Smith, Ann Tyler, Michelle Briand, Maureen Craig, Brittney Brown and Taylor Brandstatter.
"The girls played fantastic defense and had good hussle. I liked the way they got the entry pass in for the offense," A team head coach Jean Storm said.
Correshia Rogers, Jacoya Brookins and Sierra Herter, all of whom scored two points, led the Orange team for Dowagiac.
The Black team got three points from Caroline Mitchell and two points each from Jessica Harkey and Erica Greenwood.
"The first games of the season are always a learning experience," Dowagiac coach Katrina Lee said.
The Vikes are back in action Wednesday when they play Benton Harbor
