NILES – Michael Tanke and DJ Wolnik have been chosen as the Niles Daily Star Athletes of the Week for Sept. 4-9.
Tanke, a senior on the Niles varsity soccer team, reached a milestone last week by tying the schools all-time scoring record with 44 goals.
"It is quite a big accomplishment considering that Michael plays as a midfielder and already holds the record for assists. He is a very dangerous and creative scorer," head coach Jerry Holtgren said.
Tanke broke that record this week when his 45th goal entered the net.
The Niles varsity football team picked up its first win of the season on Friday, Sept. 8 in Sturgis. Wolnik's interception in the end zone with 2:43 left to play was the icing on the cake as the Vikes took possession of the ball for good and went on to claim the 24-13 win.
Athletes of the Week are chosen based on their outstanding performance in the previous week's game. More than one boy or girl may be chosen for the award.
Congratulations to this week's athletes of the week!
