Chieftain kickers rout Three Rivers

The Dowagiac varsity soccer team squared its Wolverine Conference record at 1-1 with an 8-0 victory over visiting Three Rivers Wednesday night.
The Chieftains (5-5 overall) scored seven first half goals en route to the victory. Dowagiac scored its eighth goal in the 58th minute to evoke the mercy rule.
Clay Hewitt had a hat trick for the Chieftains. He scored in the seventh, 26th and 30th minutes. His first goal came off a penalty kick.
Also scoring first half goals for Dowagiac were Josh Deuel in the 15th minute, Andrew Cuthbert in the 17th minute and Tony Black in the 20th minute.
The fifth goal for the Chieftains was an own goal scored by Three Rivers in the 24th minute.
Kasey Proshwitz got the match-ending goal in the 58th minute.
"We moved the ball well and finished our shots well today," Dowagiac coach Mike Williams said. "Now we have to prepare for Vicksburg. We must be at the top of our game to beat Vicksburg next week."
The Chieftains will take on the Bulldogs in Vicksburg on Wednesday at 6:45 p.m.
JV soccer
Dowagiac also scored a big victory in the opening match with its junior varsity squad.
The Chieftains blanked the visiting Wildcats, 9-0.
Dowagiac grabbed a 6-0 halftime lead and never looked back.
Jordan Daly scored four goals for the Chieftians, who also got goals from Jason Hurrle, Matt Collins and Drew Cripe in the first half.
In the second half, Americo Martine and Mike Rios completed the scoring.
Daly scored in the second, fifth, 17th and 35th minutes.
Collins and Cripe scored in the fourth and 30th minutes, respectively.
Martine's goal came at the 37th minute and was assisted by Hurrle. Rios' goal in the 47th minute came off a header from Jacob Deuel.
"The boys attacked the goal at the start of both halves and made a lot of great crosses," Dowagiac coach Craig Black said.
The JV squad will host Lawton on Monday at 5 p.m.
