CASSOPOLIS – The Cass County Democratic convention will meet this Saturday, Aug. 19, at 10 a.m. at the party headquarters, 804 E. State St., (M-60 East), at the easterly end of the Eastgate Shopping Center, Cassopolis, announces Cass County Democratic Executive Committee Vice Chair Burke H. Webb of Marcellus.
Voting members of the convention include Democratic Party precinct delegates elected at the Aug. 8 primary and Democratic candidates nominnated at the primary election for county commissioner and state legislative candidates.
As is customary, Cass County Clerk-Register Barb Wilson has already mailed notice of the Aug. 19 convention to the precinct delegates just elected.
"Interestingly, more Democrats were elected as precinct delegates (46) than Republicans (21) this year in Cass County," Webb notes. "The Democrats' headquarters and office, open since the spring of 2005, is open 24 hours a week, twice the hours of the Cass County Republicans' office which opened in early August. The Democrats will add hours as the pace of the campaign season increases." The Aug. 19 convention will provide an opportunity for party officers, candidates and others to update each other on current cutting-edge issues, current activities and plans for the fall campaign season. Among other upcoming activities, Cass County Democrats will be promoting and hosting a Victory Dinner on Saturday, Sept. 9, at the Edwardsburg American Legion Post. Tickets cost $15 and are available at the party office Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; 269/445-1651.
Under Michigan Democratic Party rules, delegates to the upcoming state convention (Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 26-27, at Cobo Conference and Exhibition Center, Detroit) will include current MDP members residing in Cass County and this year's precinct delegates and candidates.
