Congratulations to the Dowagiac baseball and softball teams on a tremendous spring.
The Chieftains captured both ends of the Big 16 Conference West Division crowns - something that has never been done in this league.
For the Chieftain baseball team it was the first, and last, division championship it will ever win.
Next season, a veteran Dowagiac baseball team will try and conquer the Wolverine Conference.
I know how hard Andy Kruger and his squad worked this year to captured the division championship. I applaud their efforts.
We were all expecting bigger things in the district tournament, however, that is the past and now is the time to look into the extremely bright future of the Chieftain baseball program.
What more can we say about the girls' softball team.
After going 12 years without a district championship, the Chieftains won back-to-back titles for the first time since the 1993-94 seasons.
Dowagiac actually won three consecutive titles from 1992 to 1994.
Dowagiac would like to make it two straight regional titles on Saturday in Battle Creek.
I believe Dowagiac is the favorite coming into the tournament.
The Chieftains split a pair of games with first round foe Lakeshore. Dowagiac has not faced either Vicksburg or Gull Lake this season.
The success of this program under the direction of Mike Behnke has been staggering.
Dowagiac was ranked No. 1 for a week this season and has been at the top of the list for nearly the entire year.
Let's hope Dowagiac can continue its march this weekend toward Battle Creek.
