NILES - The Brandywine Community Schools Board of Education discussed three items Monday night in preparation for the 2006-2007 school year.
At its meeting at the Bell Education Center, the board addressed its Student Wellness Policy, graduation requirements and out-of-state tuition level.
The board reviewed the Student Wellness Policy being presented for approval. The policy is a statement of procedures the district will follow for creating a healthy school environment. The goal is to enhance the development of lifelong wellness practices to promote healthy eating and physical activities that support student achievement.
Graduation requirements related to the Michigan Merit Exam were also presented. Recent changes in state laws have increased the amount and type of credits a Michigan high school senior must earn in order to graduate.
The board also discussed setting the out-of-state tuition level for the 2006/2007 school year at $2,500 for the year and requiring $1,250 to be due each semester. The new agreement would be a decrease from the 2005/2006 school year, in which the cost was $1,500 per semester. All three items - Student Wellness Policy, graduation requirements and out-of-state tuition levels -will be brought back for Board approval at the first meeting in June.
Also at the regular meeting Monday night, the board:
Adopted a resolution expressing its support for the proposed Berrien County Intermediate School District Budget. This resolution is required by law for each Berrien County local education agency to approve regarding the BCISD general fund operating budget.
Certified the non-homestead operating tax levy of 18.00 mils and the debt service tax levy of 4.85 mils to be collected with the 2006 summer tax levy in Niles Township, and with the 2006 winter tax levy in Bertrand and Milton Townships.
Discussed the formation of a Grievance Committee in order for the board to possibly hear an appeal of a grievance that has been filed.
