NILES - Vietnam veteran, Odie Stewart of Niles, is organizing a walking group consisting of veterans, their families and their friends to join in the annual Memorial Day Parade.
Stewart's efforts to organize the group include extending invitations to all veterans, especially those in the most recent conflicts, stressing how important support is needed for our veteran freedom fighters and hoping this will become an annual event.
This year's theme will be, “recognizing and representing your veteran with honor.”
The walk will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 29, at the old YMCA. Try to be there between 9 and 9:30 a.m. and remember to bring drinking water.
Other Memorial Day events this weekend include a service at Mission Hills Cemetery on Sunday, May 28, at 11 a.m.
Another service, also on Sunday, will be held at the Veterans Memorial, downtown Niles, at 2 p.m.
On Monday, a service is planned for Calvary Cemetery at 9 a.m.
Memorial Day Parade lineup is between 9 and 9:30 a.m. with the parade beginning at the corner of State and Main streets at 10 a.m. sharp. Services will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery.
All participants are invited following the services to the American Legion Post 26 on Miller Drive for refreshments.
