Monday evening's softball game between Niles and Brandywine is one that will never be forgotten.
It wasn't the first meeting between the two schools, but it was the first Matt Kurtis Memorial and a traveling trophy was presented to the winner of the game. The Vikings ended up claiming the 1-0 win in 10 innings in a game that most people said was one of the best, if not the best, softball games they had seen.
This game wasn't decided by errors or the fact that one team gave in. It was just a solid softball game with two of the best teams in the area going head-to-head for a very special reason.
Matthew “Matty” Kurtis passed away earlier this year after battling cancer. He played a big role in the Brandywine athletic program for over 20 years and was also very familiar with a lot of Niles athletes as well. In his memory, the Matt Kurtis Memorial was born and will be played from this day on in recognition of a man who meant so much to so many people.
Everyone would agree that the first Memorial game was a big success and that this game will be one of the most awaited in the coming seasons.
Matty would have been proud.
