The Leisure Living developer was in contact with City Hall last week for an update on its assisted living project.
The development has been named Forest Glen.
Leisure Living plans to hold an informational meeting about the development at City Hall on Tuesday, June 20, from 7 to 9 p.m.
This meeting will provide information about services and project details for prospective tenants and their families, as well as the community, according to City Manager William H. Nelson Jr.
Nelson said Leisure Living hopes to open the project in August.
MSHDA
downtown
apartment grant
Dowagiac's Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) grant application for additional downtown apartments was approved last week, according to Nelson.
Nelson said MSHDA is taking a different approach in how these grants are awarded because many communities, unlike Dowagiac, did not utilize all of the grant funds initially awarded on past grants.
The initial grant phase will provide $150,000 for development of approximately six units, plus administrative costs.
Once the city has committed 65 percent and expended 70 percent of the initial grant award and recorded liens for the initial six units to be rehabilitated, MSHDA will process an amendment to increase funding up to the full planned production of 11 units with a total grant of $275,000, assuming an availability of state funds at that time.
Mayor Exchange
with Buchanan
Dowagiac hosted Buchanan officials last week.
City officials return the visit in Berrien County on Thursday, June 22.
Updates given
on various projects
City Department of Public Services (DPS) crews are collecting bagged leaves and brush at curbside this week.
In addition, crews are patching streets throughout the city.
The street sweeper is making its second pass of Dowagiac streets.
Crews are also scheduled to perform hydrant flushing through Thursday evening.
Trends for the two Amtrak lines serving Dowagiac continue to post increases into the new fiscal year.
Through April, the Blue Water line saw a 13.5-percent increase in ridership and a 22.6-percent increase in revenue.
The Wolverine experienced a 6.6-percent ridership increase and a 22.1-percent revenue increase over the previous year's results.
