Dowagiac JV baseball team knocks off Cardinals

The Dowagiac junior varsity baseball team improved to 12-5 on the season with a 9-5 victory over host Coldwater Tuesday afternoon.
Dowagiac jumped out to a 3-0 lead after an inning of play, however, the host Cardinals tied the game at 3-3 with a three-run fourth inning.
The Chieftains responded with a four-run top half of the fifth.
Coldwater added single runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings to cut the lead to 7-5.
Dowagiac tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh inning to complete the scoring.
Tim DeRyder was 3-for-3 for the Chieftains, who finished with 11 hits. Tyler First was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and three runs scored. Troy Stover was also 2-for-4.
Tanner Melvin drove in three runs in the fifth inning to provide the game-winning hit.
Tyler Engler (3-2) worked four and two-third innings to pick up the victory. Engler allowed one earned run on four hits with a strikeout. Alex Withorn worked the final two and a third innings, allowing one earned run on three hits with two strikeouts.
