Lady Cats dominate Mattawan tourney

NILES - Brandywine's varsity softball team traveled to the Mattawan Invitational on Saturday and dominated the field, going undefeated on the day to claim the tournament title.
St. Joseph was the only team to score just one run against the Lady Cats, who won the first game 2-1 against the Bears.
Brandywine, now 14-6 overall went on to defeat Paw Paw 2-0 and Vicksburg 3-0.
In the opening game against St. Joe, the Bobcats took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, while St. Joe scored its only run in the fifth.
Kelli Zache grabbed the win on the mound for the ‘Cats, while Jordan Goslee suffered the loss for the Bears.
Against Paw Paw, Brandywine scored its only two runs of the game in the top of the sixth inning.
Kelli Zache again took the win in the circle, with Colleen Lynch suffering the loss.
Kendra Zache was the lone top hitter in game two with a double.
In the championship game against Vicksburg, the Bobcats scored one run in the top of the second, third and fifth inningseach to claim the win.
For the third straight game, Kelli Zache won at the mound, bringing her season record to 12-5. She struck out 23 batters on the day and gave up only six hits.
Hillary Dehre took the loss for the Bulldogs.
Top hitters in the final game were Angela Newman and Brooke Coshow with one triple each, and Mallory Barber with a double.
Brandywine is now 14-6 overall and will host Berrien Springs on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
