NILES - There are two, four-year seats open on the board of education for Brandywine Community Schools. Filing petitions for re-election were only the two incumbents, President James Curran and Trustee Rick Zache.
Curran, 1347 LaSalle Avenue, is a retired Michigan State Police trooper and 12-year veteran of the Brandywine board of education. Curran said he still has the time and energy required to serve on the board.
Completing phase two of Brandywine's facility bond is the main goal for the board, Curran said. The results of the first leg of the project, Curran added, was reassurance the district handled the remodeling and improvements well. Brandywine has recently purchased new security features for all its buildings and is also preparing to refinish the middle/high school floors. Both projects are being paid for by $250,000 left over from the first bond phase. The board originally predicted the remaining amount would be about $65,000.
Brandywine trustee Rick Zache, 2297 Midway Drive, agreed completing the current bond and getting the next phase passed was a top priority for himself as well.
The superintendent of manufacturing for Coca-Cola North America in Paw Paw said the recent marketing plans for the district are also a reason to continue as a board member.
As far as improvements, Zache said he hopes to see the board direct more attention to the district's extra-curricular activities.
Voters go to the polls on Tuesday, May 2.
