Until scientists and astronauts prove human beings can live on other planets, the earth is all we have.
From creating more trash than we can possibly dispose of to changing our climate with global warming, our earth needs to be protected from ourselves.
This Saturday, April 22, is Earth Day, a day when each of us can do our part, even though it may be small, to take care of our home.
In Cass County, the Conservation District is celebrating Earth Day by holding its annual tree and shrub sale on Saturday, April 22, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Orbit Building on the corner of M-60 and Geneva Street, across from K &M Machine Fabricating.
If each one of us plants one tree for Earth Day, think of all the benefits.
Planting trees and shrubs add to the beauty of the landscape while serving a vital role by providing food and shelter for wildlife, soil protection and other additional environmental benefits, the officials from the district explain.
Seedling varieties include Red Pine, White Pine, Colorado Blue Spruce, Norway Spruce, Butternut, Tulip Poplar, Swamp Oak, Eastern Redbud, Red Oak, Tulip Poplar and Eastern Redbud.
Available shrubs include Butterfly Bush, Common Lilac, Flowering Dogwood and Red Osier Dogwood.
Seek out information on the proper planting of your tree. One major mistake, according to experts, is to put the root ball too deep. Also pruning the roots may be necessary before planting.
Cleaning up along our roads not only makes our community more attractive, it protects the wildlife which may be harmed by our discards.
The environment isn't someone else's concern. Our natural resources will only last for so long. We need to assure our great-grandchildren's world will not be harmed by our selfish ways.
It is the only earth you are ever going to have.
