NILES - It was a double whammy for the Edwardsburg varsity softball team Tuesday as the Brandywine Bobcats swept the Eddies in two games.
Brandywine, 9-3 overall, 4-0 in conference, won the first game 3-0 and the nightcap 2-0.
Edwardsburg is now 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
In the opener, both teams remained scoreless until the fifth inning. Lauren McCombs was the first Bobcat runner to cross the plate when Angela Newman singled to send her in. A play was attempted at home plate by Edwardsburg, but the ball was thrown too late as McCombs slid in safely.
Two more runs scored in the top of the sixth allowed Brandywine to extend the lead and hang on to it for good.
Pitcher Kelli Zache had the shut-out win in the first game, throwing 13 strikeouts and allowing only one walk. Jeni Bollenbacher suffered the loss.
In the second game, Brandywine got things rolling early when Kendra Zache pounded the ball in the air for her first home run of the season. The hit allowed the ‘Cats to take a 1-0 lead in the second.
The only other run came in the fifth inning when Newman had an RBI to send a Brandywine runner in.
Brooke Coshow was the other top hitter for Brandywine with a double.
In the circle, Kelli Zache threw a no-hitter and struck out nine Edwardsburg batters, bringing her season record to 7-3. Bollenbacher again suffered the loss.
