Bobcats open conference with win over Bees

NILES - The Brandywine varsity softball team added two more wins to its record on a windy Tuesday afternoon.
The Bobcats traveled to Bridgman for its first pair of Lakeland Conference games and walked away with two big victories, taking a 5-0 win in the first game and a 9-0 win in the second game.
In the first game, the Lady Cats wasted no time taking an early lead by scoring four runs in the first inning. The only other run came in the fifth inning, posting the final score.
Kelli Zache earned the shut out victory in the circle, throwing 17 strikeouts and allowing just one walk.
Erin Weber took the loss for the Bees.
At the plate, Kelli Zache had one double, two singles and two RBIs, Rachel Batman had a double, single and one RBI and Mallory Barber had a double, single and two RBIs.
In the second game, Brandywine again jumped out to an early lead, scoring four runs in the first inning. The Bobcats added one run in the third, fourth and seventh innings and two runs in the sixth.
Kelli Zache took another shut out win to bring her record to 5-1 on the season. She threw seven strikeouts and again allowed only one walk in five innings pitched. Kendra Zache came in for the save.
Miranda Strefling suffered the loss for Bridgman.
Batman was the lone top hitter for Brandywine with three singles.
The Bobcats, now 6-1 overall, 2-0 in the conference, will travel to Indiana for the South Bend Adams Tournament on Saturday. Game times are set to begin at 9 a.m.
