Storm honored at MHSAA Boys Basketball Finals

EAST LANSING - Rick Storm of Niles High School was honored as a recipient of the Michigan High School Athletic Association's Scholar-Athlete Award at the 2006 MHSAA Boys Basketball Finals at the Jack Breslin Student Events Center in East Lansing on March 25.
Storm will receive a $1,000 scholarship from Farm Bureau Insurance to be used at the institution of higher learning he attends this fall.
Farm Bureau Insurance awarded 32 scholarships, proportionately by school classification to students with 3.50 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) grade point average who have previously lettered in at least one sport in which post-season competition is sponsored by the MHSAA.
An overview of Storm's essay said:
Rick Storm, Niles, lettered in baseball four years and football three years. Academic all-state baseball 2004 and football 2005. Second team all-conference football in 2005. Treasurer of the Varsity “N Club” junior year and President senior year. Member of the National Honor Society two years, Student Council two years, Berrien County Mathematics and Science Center Class President two years. Volunteered with the Salvation Army for “Stuff-a-Bus” Program junior and senior years. Helped out with Senior Citizens Prom senior year. Plans to attend either University of Michigan, U.S. Military Academy or U.S. Naval Academy to study mechanical engineering.
Essay Quote – “Many people think sportsmanship is merely following the rules in some type of game. They are only partially right. Sportsmanship, however, encompasses a much larger world than just athletic competitions. It plays an integral role on and off the field. Sports simply teach and then reinforce the way people should act each and every single day.”
