DOWAGIAC - For the 23rd consecutive year, the Elks Senior Golf League is preparing to open up its season.
Records trace the league back 23 seasons at the Dowagiac Elks Club Golf Course.
Several of the original members are still playing in the league, however, due to attrition, the organizers are looking for new players.
According to Gordy Gwilt, who has been playing in the league for about eight years, its drawing card is that it's all about having fun.
Among the original members who are still playing are Herb Anderson, Marion Hart, Fred Bromley, Dick Smith, Ben Kopriva and Dick Grabemeyer.
Gwilt noted that when the league formed, the Elks Club had one of the only golf courses around.
While many people may not look at the layout of the Elks course as particularly tough, Gwilt said that it is a challenge to play.
Recently the Elks Club rearranged the course to accommodate its new clubhouse.
The Elks Senior Golf League is getting ready to start its 23rd season.
The league is once again inviting anyone who is interested in playing on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.
Registration dates are April 25 and April 26 beginning at 9 a.m. when the league will hold its fun days. League play will begin on May 2 and May 3.
If you would like to join the league contact Gwilt at 782-7794 or show up at the Elks Club Golf Course on April 25 or April 26.
