Snow may be blanketing the ground today, but spring sports are just around the corner for high school athletes.
Practice began on Monday for those who are participating in boys' tennis, girls' soccer, track and field, baseball, softball and girls' golf.
Some of our area squads will begin competition this coming week.
The remainder of the sports will get started in the next two weeks, weather permitting of course.
We look forward to this time of year.
After spending the winter cooped up in gymnasiums, it is certainly nice to get back outdoors and take in some fresh air and some warm sunshine.
Spring is an exciting time in southwest lower Michigan.
We are fortunate that the six schools we cover here at Leader Publications have some outstanding programs that are extremely competitive.
Year in and year out, teams from Brandywine, Buchanan, Cassopolis, Dowagiac, Edwardsburg and Niles bring home conference championships and then perform well in the Michigan High School Athletic Association post season tournaments.
Already three area softball teams are listed in the preseason state rankings.
Brandywine is ranked No. 8 in Division 3, while Dowagiac is rated No. 9 in Division 2. Buchanan is an honorable mention selection in Division 3.
We would like to wish all our area athletes good luck in the coming season.
We would also like to take this time to invite everyone in our coverage area to get out to a game or a meet and cheer on these young athletes as they strive to capture conference, division and state honors.
We know you won't regret it.
