NILES - Virginia Working knows how to rock … in a rocking chair.
The training will come in handy for Working Friday, March 17 at Brentwood Assisted Living's Second Annual Shamrock-a-thon.
Residents and employees of Brentwood will be rocking for pledge money from 2 to 8 p.m. in the fundraiser that earns money for Polly's Place; an organization that provides support in areas like domestic violence, family violence, related abuse and teen pregnancy.
Director of Activities at Brentwood Chris Seeley said residents and employees will rock in 10 chairs in the living room of Brentwood. Seeley said she got the idea for the rock-a-thon in an activity director's magazine.
This year, the money will go toward hair products and spiral and three-ring binders, Seeley said.
Last year's event raised $400 and Seeley said residents have already come close to meeting that amount for this year. A large portion - nearly $300 - has been collected by Jerri Weston, and Seeley said several other residents have collected more than $50.
Claude Parker said he will be using his antique rocker for the event. He said the chair was a gift to his parents on their wedding day in 1914 and the cushion on the rocker was made by his mother.
Community Relations Director at Brentwood Susie Hendricks said everyone is invited to donate money or their time in a rocking chair.
Hendricks added Brentwood is hoping to get a corporate sponsor to match next year's Shamrock-a-thon pledges.
