Dowagiac’s Azevedo wins at Swiss Valley

JONES - A Dowagiac teen took top honors Saturday from a field of 28 contestants ranging from seven to 44 years old competing in the First Annual Root's Ride Outfitters Rail Ride at Swiss Valley Ski Area, Jones.
The competition, presented by Swiss Valley and Root's Outdoor Outfitters of Fort Wayne, Ind., was held in the southwest Terrain Park at Swiss Valley, a downhill slope which features rails, boxes and tables as an added challenge for snowboarders and skiers.
Rui Azevedo, 16, of Dowagiac, was named Best Overall in the competition. A ninth grade student at Dowagiac Union High School, he is the son of Oscar and Candy Azevedo. Rui was also awarded first place in the male snowboarder category with a score of 52.
Deric Poorman, 19, placed second overall, as well as second place male snowboarder with a score of 50.5. Third place in the male snowboard category went to Grant Wilson, 17, with a score of 47. Both are local to the Swiss Valley ski area.
First place in the female snowboard competition was Sarah Hummel, 16, with a score of 38.5. Second place went to Dayna Dantzscher, 22, of the Wild Mountain Ski Resort area, with a score of 36. Third place winner in the female snowboarding category was Nicole Jones, 18, with a score of 31.
In the male skier class, first place was awarded to Tyler Smith, 14, who had a score of 49.5. Second place male skier Dylan Lusnford, 12, earned a score of 47.5, and Christian Hutson, 14, placed third with a score of 46.5. All three hail from the Swiss Valley ski area.
