NILES - Girl Scouts of Singing Sands Niles and Brandywine service units held their annual Tasting Tea Saturday at Ring Lardner School on Saturday. The public was invited to experience international cultures and cuisines. Each year troops choose a country to study and represent at this event. They offer authentic foods and create an exciting atmosphere through costume and displays.
This year over 20 troops participated. This event is held each year to commemorate World Thinking Day and reminds the girls that they are a part of their national organization World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS). They also make a donation to the Juliette Lowe fund from the proceeds in memory of their founder Juliette Lowe.
This year, Niles Junior Troop No. 752 representing Italy had exchange student Erica Curti join their group. She is currently a senior at Buchanan High School. Troop Leader Christal Kennedy-Race said that her girls really enjoyed learning about the Italian Culture first hand.
"Usually we learn about our chosen country from books or magazine articles." Kennedy-Race said.
This year, however, Erica was able to share directly with the fifth and sixth graders. Erica, who is here from Milan, enjoys cross country, hanging out with friends she has made here, and going to the mall.
One thing all the girls have learned is that we may all come from different places, but we all have much in common.
