NILES - The first lesson on Friday morning for Niles High School students was not in Math, English or Biology; it was about success. The message was delivered by the Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson.
The nationally syndicated radio and TV host is also an author, the founder and president of the Brotherhood of Organization of A New Destiny (BOND) and has been a guest on multiple news outlets such as Fox News and MSNBC.
Peterson spoke to the crowd in the high school's auditorium about his childhood and the anger he experienced as a result of his feelings toward his parents. The frustration, he said, stemmed partly from his father's absence during Peterson's childhood. Once he confronted his parents about his feelings, he said he was able to get over the anger and begin moving forward.
The opportunities for success, Peterson added, are ready and available to everyone in the U.S., and he said, racism is no excuse for anyone not to achieve their goals.
Peterson spoke to the school as a part of the celebration of Black History Month.
