Dowagiac freshmen win in final seconds; JV beaten at the buzzer

The Dowagiac freshmen and junior varsity basketball team split a pair of buzzer beaters Tuesday night against visiting Berrien Springs.
The Chieftain freshmen squad grabbed a 49-47 victory over the Shamrocks when Greg Nelson scored with six seconds remaining.
The junior varsity was not as fortunate as Berrien Springs scored at the buzzer for a 46-44 victory.

Dowagiac led 16-13 after one period of play and 30-15 at the intermission.
Berrien Springs cut the lead to 39-36 by outscoring the Chieftains 11-9 in the third period.
The Shamrocks also outscored Dowagiac in the fourth quarter, 11-10, but was turned away in the closing seconds by Nelson.
Nelson led Dowagiac with 11 points. Dre Kiser and Zach Russom both added nine points, while Jason Bailey and Shaun Bruens both tallied eight points.
JV basketball
Berrien Springs outscored Dowagiac 14-6 in the final eight minutes to pull out the last-second victory.
The Chieftains led 13-10 after one period of play and 22-18 at halftime.
Dowagiac upped its lead to 38-32 after three quarters of play.
Charles Mersereau led the Chieftains with 14 points. Dowagiac also got 10 points from Freddie Soto. Nieco Brown finished with seven points. Jake Cox and Ronnell Grady scored six and five points respectively.
The Chieftains are back in action Friday night when they travel to Mattawan.
The freshmen team will get things started at 4:15 p.m. The junior varsity game is scheduled to begin at 5:45.
