BUCHANAN - With a rowdy student section cheering them on, Buchanan's varsity volleyball team gave Coloma a scare at handing the Comets their first loss of the season Wednesday night in the Buck gym.
That bid came up short as Coloma left with a 3-1 Lakeland Conference win.
Coming out flat in the first game, the Comets disposed of the Lady Bucks in game one, 25-9. That loss didn't quiet the crowd as the Buchanan students continued to cheer their Lady Bucks on. In the second game of the night, Buchanan tied the game at 21, but couldn't get the final four points to pull off the win, dropping game two to the Comets 25-21.
The third match of the night was a see-saw battle with neither team able to spread the lead to more than three points. Buchanan forced a game four with a 25-23 win.
The momentum continued for the Lady Bucks as they rushed out a 9-1 lead. But Coloma clawed their way back into the game as they tied the game at 12 and took a two point lead, 14-12, before the Bucks tied it at 14. The Lady Bucks could never take the lead back. Coloma went on to take a 25-21 win.
For Buchanan Emily Ross had 18 assists and eight kills with Katrina Weldy also collecting eight kills for the night. Jill Woodrick had five kills and three aces to lead the Bucks.
The Bucks will host the Bucks Classic on Saturday with pool play to begin at 9 a.m.
