WASHINGTON - Cass County's congressman, U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, joined several of his Republican colleagues in the House of Representatives in calling for immediate leadership elections to select a majority leader.
Rep. Tom DeLay of Texas stepped down Saturday morning.
Rules of the House Republican Conference require the support of 50 members to force new leadership elections.
Moderate Rep. Charlie Bass of New Hampshire and conservative Rep. Jeff Flake of Arizona spearheaded the effort to gather the required number of signatures for the petition.
DeLay faces campaign finance charges in his home state.
