Powers continues as chairman

CASSOPOLIS - Robert Powers of Marcellus was re-elected chairman of the Cass County Road Commission Thursday, his 16th year as board chairman.
Re-elected vice chairman was Cliff Poehlman of Niles. This is the second year for Poehlman as vice chairman. He was appointed last year upon the retirement of Vice Chairman Bradley Walker.
Joseph Bellina III, engineer-manager, will continue as chief financial officer, and Grace Chester will continue as clerk. Lois Jacobson, financial director, was named acting clerk.
Salary increases were approved for staff members at 3 percent. This is for non-union employees and is the same increase negotiated for union employees.
The board also awarded $50 savings bond to four employees drawn out of a jar for the fourth-quarter safety awards. They are Rick Arnold, Harold Purucker, Daryl Polmateer and Harry Beach. Employees are put into the drawing for working each quarter without an accident.
In a related matter, employees Lee Sherry, Bob Sestriic, Johnny Fonseca, Dallas Cloud, Lance Stevenson and Rick Janssen were named to attend a Mine Safety and Health Administration winter workshop Jan. 26 in Grand Rapids.
The board will seek bids for culverts and bridge materials, liquid calcium chloride and dust control, aggregate materials, asphalt materials and grader underbody blades to be opened at 9:30 a.m. March 2.
The board went into closed session to discuss an employee evaluation.
The board will continue to meet on the first and third Thursdays of the month at 9 a.m. at 340 N. O'Keefe Street.
