Shooting Jan. 1 at Dowagiac VFW

DOWAGIAC - Police Chief Tom Atkinson reports that the Dowagiac Police Department responded to a shooting which occurred at the VFW at 472 E. Division St. at approximately 12:44 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 1.
City police officers were advised that a male subject had been shot in the parking lot of the VFW.
Upon arriving, officers located a 26-year-old male subject from Dowagiac who had been shot in the arm.
Officers were advised by the victim and witnesses that the suspect fled the scene on foot after the shooting.
The victim was transported to Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital for treatment of what appeared to be non-life- threatening injuries.
While police were on the scene investigating the incident, the suspect returned to the scene and turned himself in to Dowagiac police.
Police arrested the 39-year-old Dowagiac man for the shooting and lodged him at the Cass County Jail on charges of attempted murder, felony firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, felonious assault and possession of a firearm while intoxicated.
This incident remains under investigation.
All charges are pending authorization through the Cass County Prosecutor's Office.
Police withheld the name of the suspect pending his arraignment in Cass County Fourth District Court.
