NILES - “Something needs to be done.”
This is the belief of Richard Noble, Niles Township trustee and other township officials who agree a left turn light should installed at a busy Niles Township intersection.
When accidents continually occur at the same intersection, or spot on a particular road, people start to ask questions as to why this is happening.
On Wednesday morning, for the second time in a matter of weeks, another accident occurred at the intersection of South 11th Street at Chestnut, the private drive entrance to Franklin Woods, mobile home park, in Niles Township.
According to Niles Township Police Department officials, the call of a unknown injury accident, involving four vehicles and a possible broken leg, came into the dispatch center at 11:17 a.m.
Officers from the Niles Township Police Department, Niles Township Fire Department, troopers from the Michigan State Police in Niles and SMCAS ambulance service personnel all responded to the scene.
When all was said and done five vehicles were involved in the accident and at least one person was transported to the hospital by SMCAS, officials said.
No further information was available as officers are still conducting an investigation of the accident.
Niles township officials have been working with the Michigan Department of Transportation to get a left turn light installed at the intersection to cut down on the number of accidents there.
MDOT officials notified the township officials just after the last accident occurred that they would not be installing the left turn light at the intersection, but would be installing one at South Third Street and US-12, another bad intersection within the township.
Noble believes one of the problems with the intersection is the speed at which vehicles are able to travel on the road.
Noble reiterated the fact that he and the township will continue to work on getting a turn light installed at the intersection.
