Seniors can sign up now for Medicare drug plan

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, reminded Southwest Michigan's seniors they can now select their new Medicare prescription drug plan.
The new Medicare prescription drug benefit fully takes effect on Jan. 1.
The landmark new program provides all of the 1,447,595 Medicare beneficiaries in Michigan with the voluntary option of joining a Medicare prescription drug plan.
The 85,000 plus seniors in the 6th District who are eligible to participate in the Medicare drug program can sign up for specific drug plans starting tomorrow and have until May 15, 2006, to select a plan.
"I want to be sure that every senior in Southwest Michigan is aware that real savings are just around the corner," said Upton. "There are many options for our seniors to choose from – and I understand that it may be overwhelming for some folks, but there are resources available to help you select the right plan for your needs. Seniors should not be discouraged by the process. There are many folks at the state and federal level to provide assistance in choosing a plan. There are real savings to be realized if decide select to participate in the program. The drug plans are especially important for low-income seniors. Under this new, voluntary plan, Southwest Michigan's 85,000 Medicare beneficiaries will have access to more affordable prescription drugs. Seniors can take these savings to the bank."

Seniors can receive free, personalized counseling from the Michigan Medicare/Medicaid Assistance Program by calling 1-800-803-7174.
