NILES - Each year fourth grade students at Brandywine Elementary and schools across the state of Michigan learn about the state's history in their classrooms.
A large part of the history of Michigan includes the Native Americans, who lived here long before the state was settled by others.
The students in Kaila Sickon, Diana Curran and Meri Mehaffie's classrooms have created models of long houses and wigwams which the Native Americans lived in, along with Native American tools. They also wrote reports on books they read about the Native Americans.
Abby Schroeder said her favorite part of learning about the Native Americans in social studies was learning the different things they had to do in their daily lives.
Mckalyn Shreve, explained how the Indians used sign language to talk to each other and thought it was interesting that they were the first ones to ever live in Michigan.
The students also learned about the Chippewa, Iroquois, Ottawa, Miami and Huron tribes.
