NILES - Niles residents came out Friday morning to the Veterans' Memorial at Riverfront Park, to remember those who have served and those who are currently serving in the United States military.
We are here celebrating the American veterans who were willing to to sacrifice their lives for the common goods and there are 24 and a half million veterans living here in the United States today and we are here for them today, he added.
I think this memorial means even more now that our country is at war in Iraq. I also think a memorial like this should be in every community, Liebetrau added.
I will forever be greatful to those who helped me with this project and for all the support myself and the committee received from everyone in the community, Liebetrau said.
Just weeks ago members of the Fort St. Joseph Historical Association buried two time capsules at the south entrance of the memorial, with artifacts and mementos from various community members.
It was heartwarming to see all of these people here. In the past there have been only like 10 people at the ceremony which was held at the city hall, Donna Ochenryder, a member of the Fort St. Joseph Historical Association, who worked on the time capsules, said.
