CASSOPOLIS - Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood Jr. reports that his deputies handled a fatal accident on U.S. 12 near Union Road in Porter Township at 5:37 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4.
Benjamin Taylor, 12 years old and from Union, was riding his bike westbound on U.S. 12 against traffic.
He crossed over the white line into oncoming traffic and was struck by a vehicle traveling eastbound.
Benjamin was transported to Elkhart, Ind., General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Gene Kaiser, 44, from South Bend, Ind., was traveling east on U.S. 12 when he struck the victim, who had crossed into his lane. Kaiser did not sustain any injury in the accident.
Seatbelts were worn at the time of the accident, although a helmet was not. Porter Township fire and ambulance assisted deputies on the scene.
Alcohol was not a factor in the accident, which remans under investigation at this time.
