Battle Creek Harper Creek tops Chieftains

A modest two-game winning streak went by the wayside Tuesday night as Battle Creek Harper Creek's Lindsay Haggerty came up big in the second half.
Haggerty scored 15 of her team-high 19 points in helping Harper Creek to a 67-58 Big 16 Conference non-divisional victory over the Chieftains on Senior Night.
Battle Creek raced out to a 20-6 first quarter advantage which it stretched to 24-6 before Dowagiac mounted a comeback.
The Chieftains outscored Harper Creek in th e second quarter 16-10 to narrow the lead to 35-30 at the intermission.
Harper Creek (10-9) and Haggerty took over in the second half.
Dowagiac (6-13) was able to keep it close throughout much of the second half, but could never catch up.
Harper Creek outscored Dowagiac 18-15 in the third quarter and then 14-13 in the final period to complete the victory.
Katy Stuppy led all scorers with 25 points, while Holly Lowe scored 20 points.
Stuppy also had eight assists, a block and two steals.
Besides Haggerty's total, Harper Creek also got 17 points from Megan McCarty and 12 points each from Morgan Barnes and Alyssa Tone.
Haggerty also had 13 rebounds, a block and two steals.
JV basketball
The Dowagiac junior varsity basketball team captured its fourth straight victory with a 44-38 decision over Harper Creek.
Dowagiac led 16-9 after one period of play, but trailed 25-21 at the intermission.
The Chieftains outscored Harper Creek 23-13 in the second half.
Dowagiac held an 8-5 scoring advantage in the third quarter and a 15-8 margin in the final period.
Tenisha White led Dowagiac with 15 points, while Shardatsha Fitchett added 10 points and eight points from Beth Williams.
Dowagiac travels to Niles on Thursday for its regular season finale.
