CASSOPOLIS - Poor shooting again doomed the Dowagiac varsity basketball team as it was defeated by host Cassopolis Thursday night in a non-conference contest, 34-21.
The Chieftains shot just 15 percent on the night (7-of-46) and were outrebounded by the Lady Rangers 40-36.
Dowagiac led just 6-4 after one period of play and 8-7 at the intermission.
The Lady Rangers outscored Dowagiac 14-5 in the third quarter and 13-8 in the final eight minutes to secure the victory.
Dowagiac shot just 16 percent in the first half (3-of-19) and just 15 percent in the second half (4-of-27).
Cassopolis also struggled from the field in the first half shooting just 13 percent (3-of-23). The Lady Rangers headed up to 41 percent in the second half (12-of-29) to earn the victory.
Cassopolis' Michelle James led all scorers with nine points, while Nikitas Nelson, Dee Dee Hawkins and Shanice Thompson all finished with six points.
Hawkins also had 11 rebounds, while Nelson had 10 rebounds.
Dowagiac was led by Holly Lowe who scored seven points. Stuppy was held to just five points. Kristy Cooper finished with three points.
Kim Luthringer and Jolynn Hawkins had eight and seven rebounds respectively.
JV basketball
The Dowagiac junior varsity basketball team picked up a 54-43 win over host Cassopolis Thursday night.
Dowagiac led 7-4 after one period of play, but trailed 16-12 at the intermission.
Dowagiac outscored Cassopolis 23-16 in the third quarter and 19-11 in the final quarter to record the win.
Sada Nealey led Dowagiac with 16 points, while Beth Williams scored 11 points and Shardatsha Fitchett added 10.
Cass' Kia Luckey led all scorers with 25 points.
