Chieftain cagers fall to host Mattawan

Mattawan outscored Dowagiac 14-3 in the first quarter Tuesday night of its Big 16 Conference non-divisional contest with the Chieftains.
Dowagiac played with the Lady Wildcats the final three quarters, however the damage was done.
Mattawan defeated the Chieftains 62-46.
After falling behind by 11 points in the first period, Dowagiac was outscored by just two points in the second quarter (17-15) and by four points in the fourth quarter (15-11).
The Chieftains outscored the Lady Wildcats 17-16 in the third quarter.
Dowagiac again had trouble shooting the ball Tuesday night as they were just 5-of-24 in the first half (21 percent).
Mattawan was red-hot in the first half as it hit 15-of-26 shots (58 percent).
Dowagiac did improve its shooting in the second half (37 percent), while Mattawan cooled off to shoot just 38 percent.
Katy Stuppy led all scorers with 22 points. Stuppy also had six rebounds and five assists.
Holly Lowe scored eight points for the Chieftains with a pair of assists.
Sarah Ostyn scored six points, while Kristy Cooper added four points and five rebounds.
Tricia Principe led Mattawan with 16 points.
