It’s official: School board OKs option on land

NILES - Step by step Niles residents are getting closer to having to make a decision as to whether to fund the building of a new high school.
On Monday, the Niles Community Schools Board of Education successfully negotiated an option to purchase 68 acres of land located at the intersection of Lake and Carberry streets, on which to construct a new high school.
The board also approved a special meeting for Monday, Nov. 14, at 5:30 p.m. at the Westside Administration Building to approve the ballot language for a bond referendum.
In other business Monday night, the board approved the updating of several of its policies, as recommended by its policy company, NEOLA.
Policy updates include that of the criminal history record check, military leave, outside activities of staff, fair labor standards, the school calendar, student records and confidentiality.
Next, the board authorized the seeking of bids on three, 30-passenger buses through the Michigan School Business Officials School Bus Purchasing Cooperative.
Finally, Law discussed the preliminary enrollment numbers for the district for the month of September.
Law said there has been an increase in the student population for grades kindergarten through 12.
