On Saturday we were treated to one of the best college football games ever held.
Or were we?
The Fighting Irish once again proved that coming off a bye week, they are as good as any team in the country.
But a big question remains for all ND fans. Why is it that this team plays like a championship team against tough competitors, but will drop a 20-point decision to the worst team in the country?
That question will remain a mystery for now.
Head coach Charlie Weis stated Monday that this wasn't his greatest game ever because his Irish lost, however, it seems ND followers disagree.
In fact, a poll taken on various websites like Sports Illustrated and College Football This Week, showed that the center of the sporting universe was South Bend, Ind. on Saturday
Was it because USC is the No. 1 ranked team right now, or is that how many people follow the Irish? Well, a little of both according to the polls. The Trojans have increased in popularity, as most teams would when they are extremely successful, but there's something about Notre Dame that college football followers love. And it seems the college football “watchers” are increased when the Irish are competitive.
Regardless of the fact that it lost, Notre Dame earned the respect of the college football nation this past weekend and the Fighting Irish served notice that they soon will be among the sport's elite teams in the not so distant future.
The 2005 fall sports season is almost coming to an end.
Brandywine's varsity tennis team wrapped up its 2005 season this past weekend at the state finals, where it took 15th. Though the Lady Cats didn't bring home a state trophy, they have a season worth bragging about.
Brandywine went undefeated in the regular season, having only one tie with Dowagiac, it grabbed its second straight Lakeland Conference championship and was able to advance to the state finals. Senior Bethany Daniel also holds a new school record for most career wins.
And even better, the Bobcats will be back full swing next year, when they return 10 of their 12 players from this year's squad.
Another young team who also advanced to state finals was Buchanan's varsity tennis team. Though they didn't quite have the success of the Bobcats, the Bucks still had a great season and have a lot to look forward to in the future.
Congratulations both teams on a memorable season.
If you haven't had the chance to get out and watch the area soccer teams this season now is the time.
Soccer districts begin next week at various locations around the area.
Three Rivers will host the District 17 tournament, where Niles will take on Mattawan at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 25.
Six other teams join the tourney, with the four winners from Monday's game advancing on Thursday, Oct. 27. The two winners will compete for the title on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 2:30 p.m.
In Division 3 action, hosted by Edwardsburg, Brandywine will face River Valley on Monday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m., while Buchanan will take on Dowagiac at 4:30 p.m.
The four winners from Monday's games will advance on Wednesday, Oct. 26 and the final two teams will meet on Saturday, Oct. 29 at noon.
Good luck to all of our local teams in the up and coming tournaments. Stay posted with the Daily Star for complete results from games.
