NILES - Food and fun are great incentives for raising funds for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Students and staff at Lake Michigan College's Bertrand Crossing campus enjoyed an authentic New Orleans-style cajun meal on Wednesday as they took part in the ”We love New Orleans – Help Katrina Victims Mardi Gras“; food party.
Shaw shared his idea with Barbara Craig, director of academic and student services, and Craig just ran with it, he said.
They both said they knew people would love to eat the authentic dishes; and if people knew the proceeds were going to the Hurricane Katrina victims, it would be even better.
The event was sponsored by the school's Multicultural Student Club. For a donation, those attending were able to enjoy an authentic cajun buffet, catered by That's New Orleans Cajun Deli II in Scottdale.
Craig added the event shows LMC has an interest in things going on in the community and is doing its part to help.
Megan Hubble, a freshman from Buchanan, said the food party was a cool event which was fun. It's also something which everyone is able to enjoy.
Niles residents Elaine and Kenneth Spray came out to the event after Kenneth Spray received an invitation on his desk at work. They said it sounded like a good time; and with the funds going to the victims of Hurricane Katrina, there was no reason not to go.
Besides the We love New Orleans – Help Katrina Victims Mardi Gras“; food party, students are collecting change and pop cans.
The American Red Cross will be at the Lake Michigan College – Bertrand Crossing campus today conducting a workshop for students and staff about the facts and fiction related to the hurricane relief effort.
They will also talk about ways to donate to the hurricane relief effort and what steps everyone can take for their own home emergency preparedness.
