NILES - The quick response of local law enforcement agencies led to no injuries sustained in a large brawl Monday evening.
At about 7:55 p.m. on Monday officers from the Niles City Police Department responded to a large fight in progress in the area of North Sixth and Sycamore streets, according to a police report.
The first officer on the scene, Lt. Fulton Moore, reported between 65 to 100 subjects gathering in the location, yelling and screaming at each other.
Physical fighting started and spread out across the surrounding streets and yards, the report stated.
As Moore attempted to stop as many fights as possible, he became a target, as well, the press release stated. Moore sustained no injuries.
A total of nine arrests were made for disturbing the peace. Seven adults and two juveniles were booked at the Niles Law Enforcement Complex.
All of the adults were cited and posted bond, while the two juveniles were cited and turned over to their guardians, a police report stated.
The seven adults arrested were Jeron Allen, Camia Allen, Jennifer Allen, Kimberly Jackson, Annette Jackson and Krystol Jackson, all of Niles, and Depries Jordon of Ypsilanti. The two juveniles arrested were also from the Niles area.
Merriman said those arrested during the incident aren't really specifying why the fight occurred.
Monday evening's incident wasn't the first of its kind to occur in the area. Merriman said the area of North Sixth and Sycamore streets is often the topic of discussion at city council meetings, as it's a place known for considerable drug trafficking.
The Niles City Police Department is continuing it's investigation into the matter at this time and will have extra patrols over the next several days to ensure there is peace in the community.
