NILES - The numbers are looking good for both Niles and Brandywine schools.
An important event took place in schools across the state of Michigan yesterday. It was the second of two student count days which occur for schools each year.
One count day takes place in February, with the other in September.
Last year the districts each received $6,700 in state aid for each student.
The Niles Community Schools were happy with their count. Prior to Wednesday's count, the Niles Community Schools were projecting their numbers would be around 4,006 students for the district. The preliminary number the district is showing its student count is 4,030.
Wright added that anytime your numbers are higher than your projection it's good news for a district. The increase in students means more revenue for the district, but at the same time there are still budget concerns with things like rising fuel prices, insurance benefits and retirements.
Brandywine Community Schools saw their numbers go up slightly from projections.
The district was anticipating their number of students would be going down from the 1,442 they had last year. Their count Wednesday was 1,440 students.
All of Wednesday's numbers are preliminary as an audit has to be done on each district to ensure the count is correct.
If a child was absent on Wednesday, due to an illness or other circumstances, then the students has 10 days to be officially counted.
