Dowagiac drug delivery leads to prison

CASSOPOLIS - A 23-year-old South Bend, Ind., man who delivered an imitation controlled substance in Dowagiac and obstructed a police officer landed himself a prison term during sentencing in Cass County Circuit Court on Sept. 16.
It was March 16 when Dowagiac police officers were investigating a complaint involving someone with a gun on S. Lowe Street, Dowagiac, recounted Cass County Circuit Judge Michael Dodge.
Curtis Turner, of 806 W. Lindenwood, South Bend, took off running, and officers were able to catch him.
They found $40 worth of cash and plastic bags in his possession. They also found bags of marijuana; however, crack cocaine discovered was fake, Dodge said.
Turner is to pay a $60 crime victims' fee, $180 in state costs, a $34 laboratory fee and $800 in court costs.
Also sentenced were:
Henry Moore, 24, of 17087 South St., Vandalia, received 365 days in jail less credit for 81 days served for delivering crack cocaine less than 50 grams on Jan. 21 in Vandalia.
Moore sold $225 worth of crack cocaine to a police informant.
He committed the crime while on probation for delivering crack cocaine less than 25 grams. He is to pay a $60 crime victims' fee, $60 state fee and an $83 laboratory expense. His sentence is concurrent with the sentence is currently serving.
Michael Brooks, 44, of 58430 Michigan-62, Cassopolis, received a two to seven-year prison term for third-degree, habitual second, fleeing an officer, and 90 days jail with credit for 90 days served each for second-offense operating while intoxicated, second-offense driving while license suspended and carrying an open container. All terms are concurrent. He is to pay a $60 Crime Victims' fee, $60 state fee and a $34 laboratory fee and $800 in court costs.
Paul Erler, 24, of 105 West Prairie Ronde, Dowagiac, received 180 days jail each for two counts of felonious assault with a dangerous weapon when he argued with two men on July 10 at the Prairie Ronde address and threatened them with a kitchen knife and a skate board. He received credit for 68 days served and is to pay a $60 Crime Victims' fee and $120 state fee His sentence is concurrent.
Jeffrey Hupp, 34, of 53510 Decatur Road, Decatur, received two years probation for manufacturing marijuana and 40 hours of community service for possession of marijuana on June 21 on Decatur Road. Hupp used marijuana since the age of 17, according to court records, but has no criminal history. He is to pay a $60 Crime Victims' fee, $105 state fee, $40 per month probation fee and $800 court costs.
Glen Hammond, 52, of 52199 Glenwood Road, Dowagiac, received two years probation and credit for 62 days served for fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct against a disabled woman on June 9 on Graham Street, Cassopolis. He is to pay $40 per month probation fee, $60 Crime Victims' fee, $60 state fee and $800 court costs. He is register as a sex offender.
