In the heart of the apple area, a festival celebrating the harvest is a tradition looked forward to. This year's 33rd Four Flags Apple Festival begins Thursday and offers four days of events and activities for all ages.
The festival is always a success thanks to a large number of volunteers, who start preparing for the event as soon as the last one is over.
And with the crowning of this year's royalty, entertainment is offered, with fireworks both Friday and Saturday evening.
If you've ever heard the song "Grama Got Run Over By a Reindeer," be prepared to meet the "Da Yoopers" in person on Friday evening.
Da Yoopers Musical Comedy Show will be at the Four Flags Area Applefest Friday evening, Sept. 30, at 7:30 p.m.
For ticket Information call (269) 683-8870.
Fireworks will follow the show and also Saturday's show.
On Saturday, Irv Cass, Niles' own award-winning Elvis impersonator, will team up with the Liverpool Legends for a performance of "Elvis Meets the Beatles."
The Grand Parade on Saturday will leave the corner of Sycamore and Second streets at 1:30 p.m. and end at Niles High School.
For those who like arts and crafts, you can't miss the selection in the many booths at the Apple Festival grounds, by the Niles airport.
Many contests are also offered, from the best scarecrow to the biggest apple.
Or maybe you want to enter the pie eating. If not, don't worry, there are lots of booths offering tasty treats from elephant ears to corn dogs. And a tent filled with products made from, what else, apples.
Always popular is the Lip Sync, which will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Also Sunday, joining the festival is a car show put on by the Michiana Cruisers.
