Fall, or should I say autumn, is by far my favorite season of the year and I can see I'm not alone. Driving around town lately, I have seen a lot of fall decorations in front of businesses and homes and hear residents of the town sharing their stories on why fall is their most favorite time of year.
The leaves, the weather, apples, Halloween, the list goes on.
While surfing the web last night, actually I was surfing ebay, a weird question popped in my head, why do we refer to autumn as fall? Well, that's pretty easy I thought to myself 'because it falls between summer and winter….or is it because that's when the leaves fall off the trees?' Knowing neither of those were the right answer, I had to look it up myself. So I found a website that explained where the name came from.
The name fall originated not because of the fall of leaves from the trees or because it's in between the seasons, but because it is the season when the sun falls below the equator, to spring back up again six months later.
Makes sense to me and sounds much more intelligent!
So, now that I have taken the long road to my original column, fall is my favorite time of year for many of reasons. Like everyone else I have talked to, I also love the colors of fall, the weather is perfect, the apples are at their best, but one of my favorite things is football! Friday night football is great, but the games that follow all day Saturday are even better!
I'm not one to sit and watch a whole football game, unless it's a very important game. I'm the one you don't want to give the remote to because I flip from game to game and if there is a great movie on I will flip to it for a bit, then it's back to games, then to E! or VH1, then the games, you get my drift?
So my goal for this Saturday? To watch the entire Notre Dame-MSU game! Hey, it's their first home game and also a pretty big one. Not only are the two teams unbeaten so far, but the Spartans have won more games at Notre Dame's stadium than any other team. On Saturday, they will be shooting for their fifth win in a row.
But, with Notre Dame ranked No. 10 in the recent Associated Press media poll and Michigan State's offense ranked second in the nation, we can count on seeing an excellent football game in some excellent fall weather!
Go Irish!!
In high school football action tonight, Niles is hosting Portage Central for a Big 16 West Division game set to begin at 7:30 p.m.
It will be a battle of the neighboring towns as Brandywine and Buchanan meet on the field at Brandywine High School for a Lakeland Conference match-up.
Game time there is also set for 7:30 p.m.
Check out Saturday's Daily Star for all results of tonight's games!
