DECATUR - Mark Brewer, chairman of the Michigan Democratic Party, presented the Cass County Democracy Club with its official certificate of charter as a local Democratic club on Saturday, Aug. 20.
Less than six months ago the Democracy Club was just an idea to promote the interests of ordinary Americans, the principles of the Democratic Party, good government and democracy.
And the only way to improve our government is to overcome individual apathy and complacency; to get ordinary people involved, take an active interest, become educated on issues and participate in the political process.
Members have become active by attending meetings of local government bodies, including planning commission meetings, city and village council meetings and county commission meetings.
The club had a presence at the Dowagiac Fun Fest and at the Cass County Fair.
A number of club members met with U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow on Aug. 6.
Club President Myron Miller, Secretary Judy Corak and member Dora Clarke-Pine met with Gov. Jennifer Granholm at her summer residence on Mackinac Island on Aug. 14.
The club is growing.
The current membership represents a cross-section of the community that includes members of the middle class, the working class, organized labor, professionals, business owners, veterans, students, individuals with disabilities, seniors and others.
In less than six months the club has grown from an idea into a reality.
The club has become a positive force for improving our government.
Recognized by the Democratic Party and by our elected leaders, the club is principle- and issue-oriented; a proactive grass roots movement that is moderate and inclusive and could appeal to anyone, regardless of political affiliation.
