NILES - The summer has lent beautiful warm nights for area residents to enjoy the peaceful setting at the Niles Riverfront Amphitheater listening to local groups perform.
The free summer concert series are drawing to a close with a performance from the Town Cryers.
Tom Meldrim of Mattawan and Terry Morlock of Buchanan are instrumentalists, songwriters and vocalists who have resurrected the original Town Cryers after returning to Southwest Michigan.
As the Town Cryers, Terry and Tom performed extensively in the Midwest during the folk revival of the 1960s and 70s. In the intervening years they performed on the east coast regularly appearing together and with other artists.
Tom and Terry draw on many of the same sources as the original Town Cryers to create their performances of 40 years ago. Carl Sandberg's American Songbag, Tom Paxton, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger and the Weavers are just a few of the sources for the music they mix with traditional and original material into their special brand of "vintage" folk music.
n a tip of the hat to their old fans the Town Cryers motto is: "The Unforgettable Songs of a Whole Generation Who Can't Remember."
The Town Cryers will also be performing today at the Buchanan Fest at 2:30 p.m. and next Saturday, Sept. 3rd, at 8 p.m. with Ed Bennett at the Box Factory in St. Joseph.
If you miss the Town Cryers in person you can catch them on WNIT's Open Studio program broadcast on Thursday evening, Sept. 22.
